Why I built this
In 2017, I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, and the reality of eating out changed overnight. I quickly realised that the simple joy of spontaneity was gone. Whether it was wandering around a festival trying to find a single food stand I could rely on, or spending hours researching and calling multiple places before a weekend trip, every meal required a military-grade plan. And nothing is more frustrating than walking into a venue, being told an item is gluten-free, only to find out they use a shared fryer.
Social media is full of recommendations, but they are scattered everywhere, uncoordinated, and hard to verify on the move. Living with coeliac disease or needing to eat strictly gluten-free is hard enough, but finding venues you can actually visit with peace of mind shouldn't be.
Over the years, I discovered that there are incredible venues out there putting in the real work for the coeliac community from passionate local independent cafes to brilliant larger businesses and chains with gold-standard kitchen protocols. They take the time, they understand cross-contamination, and they genuinely care, yet they often get lost in the noise of generic review sites. I wanted to change that.
At its heart, Coeliac Key is built on a simple truth: coeliacs find confidence in other coeliacs. I wanted to bring back the joy of spontaneity by creating a dedicated, live space where our community, along with friends and family, can map, share, and celebrate the venues big or small that truly get it right.
